It is so difficult to sum up a book which you so badly wanted to like, but couldn't. I'll try my best in this regard.
In short, the kite runner summary is a story of a boy named Amir and his path to redemption for the mistakes of his childhood.
The first 100 or so pages which depicts the childhood of Amir and his closest aide, Hassan are very gripping but it is not the case with rest of the book. The book is overly detailed to my liking. Many parts of the book does not add any substance to the plot.Unnecessary and untimely usage of Farsi words does nothing but break the flow of the reader. I personally feel that this book does not deserve the status it enjoys.
The character of Hassan is kept in the dark and I expected to see some sort of confrontation between the two lead characters. But, that is not meant to be.
Also, it is beyond me why whenever Amir gets his hand on a kite, he starts bleeding.
I do feel that there are some moments which are really heart touching, such as the scene where the refugees are smuggled from Afghanistan in an oil truck which is quite horrifying.
I'm sorry that I couldn't give more insights on this without revealing the plot.
There are a few kite runner quotes that I liked so much.
"There is only one sin, only one. And that is theft. Every other sin is a variation of theft. When you kill a man, you steal a life...you steal his wife's right to a husband, rob his children of a father. When you tell a lie, you steal someone's right to the truth. when you cheat, you steal the right to fairness...there is no act more wretched than stealing"
"Every woman needs a husband, Even if he did silence the song in her"
"For you, a thousand times over"
All in all I wouldn't recommend this book. This book is also made into the kite runner movie which I didn't like.
But if you are so adamant about reading this I would suggest you take up this book with minimal/no expectations.
